This rock was gathered just a few miles from home. It's known locally, along with other rock found in the spillings of coal mines, as "Brookwood Stone." In Chilton County, the composition of the gravels, derived from the Appalachian Mountains and distributed by the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers, is 10% chert and 90% Quartz. This one looks very much like Carnelian. Since this is the first of the find for me, I'm keeping this one in my collection. 26mm x 18mm x 7mm. Weight: 23.85 carats.
